Happy Big Six, Emily!

Today Emily, our lovely house lady in South Africa, reaches a milestone. She is 60 years old today.  Emily told me that she was the first baby to be born in Clocolan, Free State in 1953.

Emily has been with us since 2002 and we cannot imagine life without her. She manages and runs our household in our absence and has been doing this since joining us. She cares for our three dogs, our-now-two-cats, the gardeners,  and everything else in our home while we are far away in another country. She is  true gem. Emily and I always joke that for six weeks she is [a year] older than me.

Every year I've organized a birthday cake for Emily for this day. This year though, while I was in SA, I arranged for friend and master baker, Benita to bake Emily a special birthday cake. When I phoned Emily to wish her, I asked about the cake which she collected yesterday before going home. She was overwhelmed and kept saying "Me, dis so mooi" / "Mam, it's so beautiful". I'd asked Benita to make her two cakes and yes, you guessed it: a six and a zero, decorated in pink and white with "Happy Birthday, Emily" on it. She and her family, who're visiting her from all over the country, were absolutely enthralled by the beautiful cake! If I'm not mistaken, I think most of the neighbors were called in to Emily's house in the township to view the masterpiece!
Emily always serves with a smile!

HAPPY 60th  BIRTHDAY EMILY! BLESS YOU AND THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE FOR US!

  1. What a wonderful gem you have there. And what a gem you are as well, to look after your staff so well.
I have great respect for the work you do apart from your writing.

  3. A lovely tribute to Emily for her special birthday. I wish I had an Emily. I did when I lived in P/NG.
