Another eclectic mix of critters

Traveling from Ladybrand last week, we stopped off at a popular roadside farm stall. While having our hot drinks and waiting for our meal, I spotted two white ducks waddling past the glass.

Known colloquially as "kwakkies" 

Until I moved to the Free State, I'd never called these duck anything but white ducks. Here I heard them referred to as kwakkies pronounced kwukkeys. They're excellent snail police and as they don't eat your flowers or vegetables, they're most popular in any garden . 

We chose a table next to the roaring fire ...

...although the whole restaurant was warm because of the sun streaming in through the windows

We're not used to the cold weather any more, but we're coping! 

The restaurant has homely touches such as this antique sideboard

I felt I was being watched, and sure enough...

...Mr Rooster peering into the warm restaurant

Grant tempted him towards the window

His harem of three hens boasted chooks ...

...every bit as large as he

Later we watched the rooster begging tidbits from customers sitting outside in the sunshine
