Amur falcon

Several weeks ago I posted about a Red-footed Falcon Male. Well, it was an error as they don't occur here where I photographed it. What I posted was the Amur Falcon. I tried to get onto the post to edit it; so far no success. I'll get back to it soon.

Apologies for that mistake.

Meanwhile we've stopped so that I could photograph the same falcons which are sitting on the telephone wires in large quantities. When I did the post mentioned above, I said the female, in this case, is prettier than the male. And if I managed to snap her, I would post.

Well, here goes...

Amur falcon (Female)

Amur falcon (Male)

The male Amur falcon's underwing coverts are very conspicuous in flight. Uniform dark grey plumage, darkest on back and lightest on cheeks, throat and breast. Thighs and vent are rufous. Indistinct blackish malar stripe.

Female is more difficult to identify as she shares a pattern common to many falcons. The orange eye-ring, red cere and reddish orange feet are diagnostic.

  3. BOPs (Birds of Prey!) can be a bit of a challenge at times - they are a group that I struggle with when I am away from home.
