Meerkats

Driving out the gate on Monday evening, we stopped to watch a pair of young meerkat. (surikate surikate). Their den is about 100 meters from the property gate; every time we walk that way, Skabenga and Eddie run to this hole and peer inside. Of course, the meerkats are far too clever to show their faces!

Watching the meerkats for long enough, Grant and I were fascinated by the strange ears

The one diagnostic characteristic of a meerkat is this stance above: they stand on their hind legs and look around - a meerkat weighing a mere [sic] .9kg, is an easy meal for an average-sized Martial Eagle

The meerkat has a cult following in the UK after a large insurance company used meerkats starring in their adverts. When visitors from that country arrive in South Africa, they every bit as keen to see the meerkats (known as one of the Shy Five) as the Big Five.

I'm linking to Saturday Critters with Eileen, here

HAPPY SATURDAY TO YOU ALL!

If I were there I would HAVE to see them. these are amazing. as soon as I saw the title I came here first. a few years ago we watched a special on these beautiful guys on Animal Planet. they said they have sentinels that watch, when they would stand up and peer around the others were doing there thing, and if trouble was sighted they warned the others.
