Happy Birthday John!

Today is our firstborn, John's birthday. John has always been a precious son to us and now he is loving husband to Debbie and a wonderful, caring father to their five children. Below are two photos of John with his "last-born" - as we say in Africa - six-month-old, Israel.

It amazes me how hands-on and loving both our sons are with/towards their children. In the seventies and eighties when our children were growing up, most South African fathers were macho, Croc-Dundee -type men. No way did my husband feed the babies, bath them or get up for them at night. Nappy changes, too were mum's domain. Fatherly love, especially when you had only boys like we did, was shown by taking the boys for rides around the farm or when they were old enough, camping, fishing and hunting. One thing Grant enjoyed doing was to put the boys to bed. He always told them a cowboy story and listened to their prayers before tucking them up.

However, times have changed drastically over the years; and as you see, John who has been there for Debbie and the children all along, is a very demonstrative and loving father.

  5. Hi Jo, its been a long time since I stopped by.

Its easy to see that birthday-boy John is a tender-hearted father.

He undoubtedly takes after his loving Mom. Well done, Jo!
Have a blessed and happy 2013.

  6. Happy birthday to John. A lovely tribute to your son. It is true here too. The fathers are taking much more responsibility towards bringing up babies than in our day. My SIL is wonderful with his babies.

  8. A belated happy birthday to John! I have found the same thing to be true of my 2 older sons who are both fathers--they are very hands on and the change diapers, read and sing to their children, carry them around in a front baby carrier, feed them, etc. That's completely opposite of Jerry as a dad of young children! I think he only changed maybe 4 or 5 diapers in the six years we had kids in diapers. John sounds like a wonderful loving father and husband.
