Kenya's National Bird

The Lilac-breasted Roller occurs in almost all national parks and reserves in Kenya and in some areas is a common roadside bird. The lilac throat and breast and elongated outer tail feathers are distinctive. It perches on large, open branches, large termit mounds and even telephone and power lines swooping down on its prey and clearly showing its brilliant blue wings. This bird occurs in thornbush, savannahs and open woodland. I photographed this particular bird in a copse of trees alongside a sports fields near Fluorspar Primary School in the valley

  1. Doesn't look like any common roadside bird I've ever seen. Beautiful shot, Jo.

  2. He looks like a rather pleasant bird, not aggressive. I can't get over the array of birds in your neighborhood. We are stuck with one red robin.

  9. Oh a lovely picture, with the beautiful bird and big blue sky. Too funny that we were posting them at the same time..:)

It took me a while to get back to visit, as I've also been ill...a strange case of the Norwalk Virus...most curious and absolutely horrid. Glad to be feeling well again. Do take care of yourself.
