Goliath Heron on Lake Baringo

I have posted about Goliath Herons before but recently on our safari through Kenya, while out on a boat trip on Lake Baringo in the Great Rift Valley, I managed to get very good photos of this fascinating bird.

Our boatman and knowledgeable bird guide, Johnson stopped to show us a pair of Goliath Herons, one standing on a nest

He pointed to a younger Heron standing on the same tree top

Possibly this was the female standing to the rear of the tree-tops

When I downloaded my photos, I was thrilled with the next photo. Obviously I had the settings right, the background and surrounding foliage was perfect. I also captured this image with the rays of the setting sun playing over it.
My all-time favourite bird photos taken on Lake Baringo, Great Rift Valley, Kenya

Whoo hoo it sure is a great shot. The light was just right for you. They seem such big birds to be sitting in a tree.

Awesome captures!

I saw a Goliath at Kruger.

I laugh at our long-legged herons perched in the tree tops.

Oh, I would love to see one of these babies.
Jo, have you some details on their size?? Would it mistake me for a frog or a penguin . . . in relative terms, does it come up to my hip, my shoulder or tower above my head like some prehistoric beast?

Yup, that last shot is wonderful!! I love all the detail you can see in his feathers!

Amazingly beautiful shots of a magnificent bird Jo! I had to look this up on Wikipedia. Standing up to 5 feet tall and with a nearly 8 foot wingspan, they are the largest heron in the world, WOW!

I never knew that there were such large herons! The final photo is indeed spectacular, Jo. Everything about it is lovely. Its neck looks like it's made of gold.
