Critters in our garden

The cold weather has arrived. For thin-blooded South Africans, the low temps of 2•C and less predicted over the weekend, this is not good news. However, we still manage to soak up mid-afternoon sun on the patio and watch birds and critters braving the elements.

Last week Grant called me to photograph a grasshopper on the paving. 

A handsome fellow ...

...who obliged me by showing off the detail on his legs 

And when I stood over it for a clearer view, I saw the other hind leg was missing

This handicap didn't deter it when hopping off into the grass next to the paving

Yesterday while Rina and I sat on the patio, we watched a Common Fiscal on a camel thorn tree. As I focused on it, we saw it was eating a meal which it had hooked onto a thorn as these birds are wont to do. 

When I downloaded this photo, we all tried to identify this bird's meal. The conclusion we arrived at was that it was a baby mouse
