Total obedience

Good morning, dear Blogger friends. Most of you will know that the most important man in my life, is Skabby, my big black Lab.

Many readers will remember that for most of his first eight years, Skabby has been a chubby lad.  For the past two years, he has done the weekly Parkrun with me. And as I always tell my Weigh-Less members, you can exercise rigorously, belong to a gym; cycle or run. But...if you don't eat healthily, you will not shed the pounds. In fact, being over your healthy weight, and forcing your body to exercise, can be detrimental to your health.

During the cooler months, Skabby coped very well on the 5km weekly walk. He LOVED and still LOVES going to Parkrun. And he has become well known and loved by the other Parkrunners.

Then our summer 2022, arrived and still I took Skabby along.

 To his detriment.

Just before Christmas, he developed a hot spot which spread to a huge raw sore on his left side and rump. I stopped taking him until he was healed.

From August, 2023, my healthy dog and I started doing Parkrun together again.

Every Saturday.

All good and well.

Then that ONE extra week early in December he developed a small hot spot, which, of course, became a larger sore. I stopped taking him to Parkrun.  At the same time, I changed his diet. Now Skabby only has vegetables cooked into a soup to which I add a small cup of upmarket, veterinary pellets.  My friend, Meri, aka Dr Platzhund, my doggie psychologist, suggested I change to these kibbles from the cheaper supermarket brands.

Steadily Skabby's hot spot healed. He also started show a slight shrinking of the girth.  Still, no Parkrun, as we in South Africa, experienced one of the hottest summers from December through March.

Then disaster [almost] struck. At the end of February, I went on a social run in the evening. Even though the weather showed in the high 30's late that afternoon, I thought it would be cool enough to take my boy along.

I almost killed him.

After the walk, when we arrived at the hotel (which was the end), he collapsed outside the bar.

Three days of unadulterated agony followed for me, while my dog was hospitalized, and the vets fought to get his kidneys to function and ease his painful joints and muscles. I wrote about it here.

He survived, by the grace of God.

Since the middle of April this year, in cooler weather, we've been enjoying the weekly Parkrun together again.

Literally cooling his heels after Parkrun!

My beautiful [slim] boy

By the end of April this year, Skabby had shed 8.2kg/ 18lbs.

In May, I had to stock up on his special kibbles. Normally I buy an 8kg bag. The day I went into the vet to buy it, the young lady told me their 8kg/17.6lb bags had been recalled by the suppliers. She said I could take the 25kg /55lb bag.

Eish.

This was really LARGE. I hardly have space in my little farm cottage to store this.

Anyway, I paid for it and the young lady loaded it in my car boot.

I had a Weigh-Less meeting in town that afternoon, and when I arrived back at the farm at 4.30, everyone had already clocked out and gone home.

Double-eish!

Never one to give up, I cut a square hole in the bag as it was lying on its side in my car boot (trunk). Using a 2litre plastic jug and two large buckets with lids, (which keep Skabby's pellets fresh and dry), I scooped out pellets by the jugful and tipped them into the buckets on the lawn behind my car. Skabby, who always comes out to the car to greet me and to sniff at my shopping bags, was bouncing around hysterically. He could smell the delicious protein-flavored pellets as I decanted them from the bag in my boot to the containers.

He trotted excitedly next to me, as I carried the two full buckets from the car to my house. That afternoon, as I do every time that I carry goods from my car, I said: "It's about time YOU helped me carry, Skabby. Earn your meal for a change."  And always, he grinned at me and loped along to the cottage door. While I staggered in under the load. LOL!

Inside, as I placed the two full buckets on the floor, I noticed that both plastic lids were dusty. They needed a good scrub. I could only do this in the bath. While I was cleaning the lids with scouring powder, the thought suddenly struck me. I had left two huge buckets, filled to the brim with doggie kibbles in the kitchen. And, when I'd last seen him  Skabby, was also in the kitchen.

In a panic, I flew out of the bathroom, through my bedroom and...

... there was my dog:

sitting on the floor, next to the open bucket,  and staring into the middle distance!

Is this discipline or WHAT?

When I shared this image with my friends who have dogs, every single one replied that THEIR pooch would not have resisted the urge to dive into the yummy bucket of biscuits.

Skabby back at Parkrun

Good morning, dear Blogger friends. Thank you for your kindness in visiting and commenting on my blog even though I'm challenged to getting to visit you all. I will get there. Promise!

Thank you, too for the kind enquiries about my dearest Skabby. He is ultra healthy and back to his normal self.  I constantly have a chuckle. Many other vintage ladies like me, are asked about the health of their spouses. I am asked Jo, how is your dog? Most people ask: Jo, how is Skabby?

He is hail and hearty AND the weather is cooling down rapidly now as autumn eases into the South African winter.

Last Saturday, we had late rains and normally I would not venture onto the 5km track. But thinking this was a great opportunity to get Skabby back into a walk without the vicious Africa sun which has plagued us this summer past.

From the start to the end it rained. A steady drizzle. I walk in my top and running skipants or shorts, winter and summer. The body seems to heat up within the first 200m, and I don't relish having to remove a windcheater and tie it around my waist.

This day I did warm up within the first half kilometer, but by then I was soaked to the skin. Skabby was lapping up the coolth and damp on his newly groomed and shaved body. He has also lost weight since I started him on a strict regime (diet is a four-letter word in my business, LOL!). The day he was discharged from hospital in early March, he had lost 8.2kg. (18lbs in imperial measure)

I didn't have photos of him at Parkrun. At the end, I loaded Skabby into the car and came straight. He rolled around blissfully on the sodden lawn at home.

Skabby rolling around on the lawn after his first Parkrun this year!

The above is a screenshot of a video. Often, I will hear chortling sounds and going outside, I see Skabby rolling around on his back, obviously saying in doggie talk: oooh, life is sooo good!

Me? That day, I ran a hot bubble bath and wallowed until I thawed.

Skabby enjoying a drink from his monster plodging bowl!

One friend remarked on the size of Skabby's bowl. I explained that he has two other (much smaller) water bowls just to the right of this mammoth receptical. He uses this to cool down after walks by stepping in with his front feet, dipping his head under the surface, blowing bubbles and drinking water at the same time. Clowning about is obviously the sign of a happy, healthy dog! (IMHO - in my humble opinion!)

From this deplorable state in early March...

...to this healthy pooch off to enjoy his bone on the lawn

Now...
😆
before I bore everyone to tears, I will sign off with:

HAPPY TUESDAY TO YOU ALL!

Another double walk weekend!

Dear Blogger friends. My cleaning and prepping at The Bunker  worked out well this month. Guests are already in and settled by Friday, so Thandi and I complete all on a Thursday. I have belonged to the Valley ladies workout class since its inception in February 2019. While I was managing Steve and Estelle's art shop in the shopping center, it was easy for me to attend the hour-long session from 7.30am and then still open the shop at 9am.

However, from June that year, I started working on the farm for three mornings a week: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays.  I have Friday's free and if I don't have to clean and prep for guests, I am able to attend the class, which on that day of the week, always takes place outdoors and is followed 5km walk.

Now this is an exciting new place Mum has brought me for walkies!

This past Friday I took Skabby along to the ladies walk. Estelle and I walked together with the boy straining at the leash! When we were a distance from the main tarred road, I let him off and he ran around, joyfully sniffing at all the exciting new smells. On the return walk I clipped his leash on again and when we ended back at the starting point, he happily jumped into the back of my car.

Me and Estelle after our walk

Estelle and I arranged to me at a cafe in the shopping center for a cup of tea. Estelle's SIL Barbs, is the manager at this eatery. We sat outdoors so Skabby was able to join us!

Barbs provided water for Skabby. He drank two of these big bowls
and then lay quietly at my feet while we had our tea

Come Saturday morning, which is Parkrun day, I leashed Skabby up and into the back of the car he went. No flies on this dog. Have walk, I'm in!

Skabby and I restarted Parkrun on 12 August this year. Our time that first day (which was my Parkrun #101!) was 53minutes. The next two weeks we managed to cover the 5km in 52minutes, 16 seconds. Last week in 50minutes, 22 seconds.

On Saturday, as we started out, I could feel Skabby's bristling energy at the end of the leash. And by chance (or perhaps because of a formal walk again on Friday) I felt ready for a good walk. We finished in our best time since my injury and his hot-spot issue.
Today we clocked in at 48 minutes. Whoohoo!

I'm so grateful we have an event like Parkrun where there is no pressure to overexert yourself.  I'm also grateful that after my cracked knee surgery, I am able to regularly walk 5km every weekend. Twice!

HAPPY SUNDAY TO YOU ALL!

Georgy has been named

Good morning Blogger friends.  Last month I posted how I received a rescue kitten which my neighbor had found on the farm road. At the time the kitty had not been named; I didn't   know its gender; I still don't know... My friend, Caroline took one look at the little cat and said, Georgy is a good name. No matter what it turns out to be, Georgy will suit.

Well, Georgy has settled in wonderfully and is wreaking havoc with all his/her energy. The big cats have accepted the new kitty although Missy dishes out hefty swipes when Georgy  gets under her skin. Mama tussles has quite rough tussles  with Georgy.  I remember when she played with Missy in this manner. That was way back in 2018!

A pensive attitude belies the energetic dashing about, climbing curtains
and hurling that tiny body into open cupboards

Another walk !

Good morning dear Blogger friends. The sun has been out since Thursday, so this morning Skabby and I were able to go for a walk on the farm road. A very happy dog indeed.

Happiness is...
A good shake from tail to the tip of his nose
Paws and all while he has a drink!

Earlier this week when I woke, I spotted this critter on my office floor.

Even though it resembled a mosquito, I prefer to see it as a dragonfly. After photographing it I picked it up and put it out on the lawn

Sunny day; will walkies

Good morning dear Blogger friends. At last we had a third sunny day which dried up the muddy farm roads.

At midday, I leashed up a very, VERY excited pooch and we set out for a walk.

As we headed up the road on the way to the dam, I took in the calm and bucolic scene of the cows grazing in the top paddock. While focusing on the animals, I ensured there was plenty of sky as it was a deep blue. When Europeans visit South Africa, they always remark about how "high" the sky is. A very quaint way of describing our big sky all year around.

I could "hear" the creamy milk being created by these placid animals
Such a happy doggy running along the road
Every so often Skabby stops and "points" at something, reminding me that he has retriever in him

Skabby's pldoging bowl

Good morning dear Blogger friends. So many of you comment on Skabby's plodging bowl. He loves to cool down in it (boots and all!) when we return from a walk. He also has a great splash and plodge after he's eaten his mammoth bone every evening.

And he has a HUGE bowl of water at his disposal at all time!

Even though he has two other water bowls in the garden, Skabby prefers this giant receptacle
I love this photo which shows the sheer size of my dog!

HAVE A GREAT DAY WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND!

Fan-tailed Widowbird and dog[ged] exhuberance

Good afternoon dearest fellow Bloggers. These past weeks Skabby and I have only been able to go for a walk very infrequently. It has rained incessantly in the Central Drakensberg, not allowing the farm roads to become walkable after the muddy conditions. However, one hot sunny day  last week (the heat has also been fierce this summer),  Skabby and I got out into the veld.

As always, while said dog hurtles along the farm road, I often stop and take photos.

Missing my kitty journalist

Dear Blogger friends. I realized recently that since our dearest Ambrose went across the Rainbow Bridge in April last year, there have been very little posts about the Hedges kitties and Skabby.  Ambrose would push his way onto my desk; he would annex my office chair OR he would merely fix me with a kitty stare from the top of the fridge until I relented and gave him office space to write his Sunday blog post.

                          Walking across my keyboard...
...annexing my office chair ...
...or staring at me from a dizzy height

I would always be reminded by these antics that he had not yet has his turn at the computer. Oh dear. How I miss this feisty boy.

Chappie balancing with confidence on the edge of a very deep bowl of water!

Mama sniffed something in my handbag...
Cat nip!

A pensive cat...

Sunday was the first time in three weeks that Skabby and I went for a walk - and still the going was very muddy

HAVE A GREAT WEEK, EVERYONE

Tenth day!

Good morning my dear Blogger friends. Thank you, one and all for you kind comments on my recovery. Today is Day 10 and I am out of quarantine. However, I still don't feel energetic enough to dance a jig so am spending Sunday in bed.

You can imagine who is happy Mum has been at home for so long!

The kitties are happy Mum is finally doing what they do best: sleeping!

Skabby lies next to my bed but generally he is out on the lawn, soaking up the sun!
In between he takes gentle sips of water ! Daft dog!

Being the rainy season, we have not had many walks - and now that I am out of commission, that is on the back burner as well!

HAPPY SUNDAY TO YOU ALL

Blessings for 2022

Good morning dear Blogger friends. And so we arrive on the last day of 2021.

Last week I was spoilt by  proprietor friends in the Valley and also by one of my guests.

A guest shows her appreciation for my hospitality at The Bunker
A yummy box of biscuits from the owners of the local supermarket/family shop just below The Bunker

Not only did Amelia treat me to my favorite treats (I love cookies); she also bestowed a blessing on me for 2022. Very special indeed.

This morning as I opened my WhatsApp, I received the below message from a member in my Winterton group. I got to know her after I had met her son-in-law who owns the fencing and security company here in the Central Drakensberg.

Loosely translated: Dear Jo, thank you for being such [beautiful] person. You are steadfast, positive and an inspiration to all who cross your path. May 2022 be a blessed year for you. (another blessing - WOW!)

MAY YOU ALL HAVE A PROSPEROUS, HEALTHY AND HAPPY 2022
