Nature

I know I shouldn't be proud, but I am thrilled to bits in an-old-lady-trying-to-improve-her-photographic-skills-kinda-way with this image!

There were many, many butterflies in the garden on this particular day and I took many, many photos with disastrously disappointing results. I sat on a low wall in my garden while Shadow played in front of me. I waited patiently for a photographic  opportunity.

I zoomed in and focussed on this butterfly from quite a distance away. Once the image was downloaded onto my computer, I darkened the edges and yellow shade slightly to eliminate the "noise";  otherwise this photo is exactly as it was on my camera.

I just LOVE the way eyes, the feelers, wings and hairs on the body are emphasized  while the background is fuzzed out.  (Apologies to insect and bug experts out there if these are not correct names of the insect's parts)

I wanted to share this with you, my dear readers.

  1. Well, Jo, I'm an even older lady trying to improve my photographic skills. So far, however, I'm still at the how-to-turn-the-camera-on stage. Fortunately, there are no butterflies here in the snow.
It's wonderful what you were able to do with this, it's so pretty.
Have your vegetables started to come up yet? Haven't heard about them for a while.

  2. Great shot Jo.

My hands are no longer that steady so I have taken to snapping most things on the sport setting and auto-focus, eyesight also somewhat up the creek. My photographer son gave me the tip of shooting multiple photos. That way I stand a chance of catching something off guard. I seem to get reasonable results.

  3. You did a great job. Don't get discouraged. I think anyone who is remotely serious about catching these types of shots has more mediocre/bad photos than they can count. All that matters is that you had the patience to get a winner....and you DID!

  4. You should be proud. This is an excellent macro! The butterfly looks so soft and fuzzy like I want to pet it. I continue to work on clear macros.

  7. Lovely photo shot. Hahahah I do the same too, sometimes I would sit at a corner with my camera in hand and wait patiently for the right moment to capture the best shot. Guess we have something in common. I have yet to shoot a butterfly, hope I get to someday.

  9. You should be proud Jo, this is a stunning picture of it. This is a Brown-veined White (Belenois aurota). Very common throughout SA.
