Pied Kingfisher (female) perching on a branch at the edge of the river below the mine offices
The Pied Kingfisher is a distinctive black and white kingfisher wih a crest head and a very long bill. The male has two black bands across the chest and the female has one incomplete black chest band. This bird commonly hunts by hovering before diving, beak first, into water. It readily uses perches, even telephone lines or boats if available. It occurs at most inland waters and also at the coast. Usually found singly or in pairs. Occasionally they're gregarious and at times very noisy
The Swahili word for bird is ndege. The same word is used for aeroplane.
Her head and beak look too big for her body.

He almost looks top heavy. I like Kingfishers. Our Kookaburra is a kingfisher and I can see the similarity.
ReplyDeleteHiya Jo,
ReplyDeleteSo strange to see a black and white version when I am used to the most multi-coloured bird of the UK, with orange and teal blue.
It is usually the other way round.
Lovely shot of your black and white version.
ReplyDeleteLove kingfishers, but that's true of all birds, really...most impressed to see your first Swahili word up on your blog. If you keep it up, we'll all be able to learn along with you!
ReplyDeleteHi Jo,
ReplyDeleteLove the Kingfisher picture, it's one bird I actually know, LOL!

ReplyDeleteGreat shot Jo! Kingfishers are cool looking birds.
ReplyDeleteJo: Nicely captured, those little fast birds are hard to capture.
ReplyDeleteLovely kingfisher. How handy for him to have such a long beak for diving.
ReplyDeleteA wild and wonderful kingfisher there Jo. Soon our own Belted kingfishers will return to Michigan. Spring fever is rampant here and we're full of hopeful delusions!
