Travelling to Mwanza to do a monthly shop this week, I was fascinated by the cyclists with baskets of vegetables, mainly tomatoes. Every bicycle we passed carried tomatoes. I, for one, love tomatoes: to eat, to cook with, to make a salad or sandwich. Tomatoes are a good basis for many recipes and I always buy at least 5kg per week, and, believe it or not, we normally run out before next market day!
Tomatoes
and more tomatoes!
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
Oh yum, Jo. I've been ordered off tomatoes and citrus fruit and spices because the doctor has me on a bland diet. Meanwhile, Dick's doctor put him on a low calorie diet yesterday. Conflicting diets make for an interesting life. LOL
ReplyDeleteFascinating to see the tomatoes going to market.
K
Must be a good crop of tomatoes growing nearby. I Love tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteWe share a love of tomatoes. I also like English cucumbers and red peppers. Have a great weekend, Jo. Hugs. xx
ReplyDeleteHello Jo - I trust that you and Grant are well - love the images ... love tomatoes too ... they're second on my list after potatoes, especially roast potatoes ...
ReplyDeleteThat's an unique way to get them to market. I love tomatoes with pepper.
ReplyDeleteJo this brings me back - Love the baskets they haven't changed in 17 years since we lived in Tanzania! They used to fascinate me how many panniers they can pile on a bike! And do the oil tankers still carry huge cargoes of tomato baskets below and above the tanker? that was the iconic image I had of the trips to Dar from Iringa passing the tankers on the road. I see the roads around Mwanza are good - there's probably huge changes now. Our friends live in Handeni, Tanga I think. They work with a German development agency though they are Dutch. They are over 30 years in Tz. Iringa, Laela, Njombe, Muleba (Bukoba) and somewhere near Manyara and now Handeni. Such a life! You must write your memoirs as you've had a great life with wonderful experiences too!

Hi Jo! I love tomatoes too! It is amazing they are able to balance their bikes with all those tomatoes. I hope you are well and having a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThese are really very funny pictures, lol ! I too love tomatoes and Arthur loves tomatoe sauce !
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to see all those tomatoes being transported by bicycles! The agricultural areas around Sacramento grow lots and lots of tomatoes. Sacramento, CA, is fondly known as Sac-of-tomatoes to those of us who have lived here a long time. In August and September we see huge truck-and-trailer rigs hauling tomatoes, piled high, on the highways and freeways in the area. We also see many spilled tomatoes near the curving on-ramps to the freeways as some of the tomatoes topple off the trailers when the truck turns.
ReplyDeleteHi Jo and Grant! It's wonderful to observe the methods of transportation - and the balancing ability and agility of the cyclists! Nothing better than a good juicy tomato fresh off the vine, sliced, laid on a piece of bread with gobs of mayonnaise! Unless it is having a fresh one while in the field, sprinkled heavily with salt. ☺
ReplyDeleteBet those tomatoes are delicious, Jo.... I am ready for some good, summer tomatoes soon around here.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
