As usual, when the season changes (it's almost mid-winter here although daily temps are 25 ° Celsius!) the birding and animal-spotting also changes somewhat. These past weeks' birding trips have yielded many raptors, some well-known to us and others new sightings.
I've posted one here and will post about the others in weeks to come.
Our favorite raptor which we've watched over the past two years, is the Bateleur. We've seen this bird with a mate and up until last evening, we'd only seen the male; then we spotted quite far away in a dead tree, first the male and then the female. Here I've only posted photos of the male.

Just along the road, I spotted a Grey-headed Kingfisher which sat quietly while I got my fill of photos. I've painted this image on a plate I made at pottery this week
Driving along a rather bushy part of the road, I heard the familiar series of squeaky, nasal "zeh-zeh-zeh-zeh" of the Lesser Striped Swallow. Looking up into the dried branches of a tree, I saw a number of these pretty birds.

Driving back through the mine around the explosives magazine we saw several birds which sat while I took photos to my heart's content!

I hope you're all having a wonderful week thus far. As this post is aired this morning, I'll be attending a tea party for manager's and leaders' wives. We're all getting together to welcome and entertain the wife of the diamond mine client's CEO from South Africa who's flown in for two days .
I know, I know, it's another tough day in Africa but somebody has to do it!
Here in Brazil we are also in the winter, but I don't see as many birdsas well because I live in a big city. Miss my incursions into the field when I used to photograph everything!

I could take a 25 degree winter. There are so many colorful birds in Africa and I've been lucky enough to see a few of these except the Bateleurs have always been far away.

ReplyDeleteYour photos are wonderful. I really like that Bateleur and the colours on the Subnird and Lilac breasted Roller are amazing. But my favourites are the Kingfishers; I have a soft spot for them.
