African Red-eyed Bulbul

Today I'm posting about the African Red-eyed Bulbul; a common and wide-spread bulbul in our country. It's a resident garden bird and can be heard from early morning until after dark every day. It's call is distinctive: wake-up Gregory and also a series of mimicry.

The photos below are not perfect; some aren't even very clear. But I had to photograph a pair sitting just outside my office window - and obviously making a nest.
This bird landed on a potted fern; the nesting material can be seen in its beak
Its mate watched from the wall above

The African Red-eyed Bulbul has a conspicuous wide orange-red eye ring.
While I an the nest bird's mate watched, it flew off into the garden!

Happy Wednesday to you all!

  1. Hello, Jo! What a lovely garden bird. I love those red eyes. Great shots. Enjoy your day and the week ahead!

  2. I can see why the bulbul has red-eye for a first name. ;)

  3. Great sighting! Loved seeing them and reading the info. Sometimes a look out a window can bring about a great surprise!

  4. This seems like the chance to get some pictures of growing family at some time in the future!

  5. Bulbuls gave me lots of ID problems in Africa and India. But with that red eye I think I could be an easier one.
